Australia have pushed their 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifications forward with a 4-0 win over Vietnam this Thursday night.
The Socceroos were lively early, and almost got on the scoresheet after just nineteen seconds through a Tom Rogic strike, but the goal was called off due to Jackson Irvine obscuring Vietnamese goalie Bui Tan Truong's vision.
Despite the chalked off goal, and two potential penalties ignored, the Aussies kept pushing and eventually broke the deadlock with a Jamie Maclaren header half an hour into the match, before Tom Rogic scored a goal that counted seventeen minutes later, giving Australia a 2-0 lead at half time.
Matt Ryan made his best save of the night with his shoulder in the 62nd minute, before it was all emotional scenes at AAMI Park as Craig Goodwin and Riley McGree both grabbed their first goal in the green gold.
Ten minutes after his save, Ryan booted a long ball down the pitch, which eventually found his way down to Craig Goodwin on the left wing, who dribbled it down and chipped the keeper calm as you like, before getting on his knees and celebrating at the corner flag after scoring his first Socceroos goal at thirty years of age.
Riley McGree also got to experience that feeling. The new Middlesbrough signing came on as a sub after Goodwin's goal, and joined in the party with a quality strike outside the box to give Australia a final score of 4-0.
The win puts Australia second in their qualifying group, and keeps them on track for earning their ticket to Qatar to play in the World Cup this November.
