Coming off a great away win in the Dockerty Cup against Preston Lions, South Melbourne returned to Lakeside Stadium as the heavy favorites against Moreland City, who sat bottom of the table. A win, meanwhile, would've put South Melbourne back on top of the table, after Avondale overtook Hellas with a 2-1 win against St. Albans yesterday.
However, despite being seen as the weaker side, it would be Moreland who struck first, as a mix up at the back led to Willem Lejeune striking the ball straight into Matt Sporle, who tapped the ball in to give the underdogs a 1-0 advantage.
South Melbourne ended up showing their class six minutes later as Max Mikkola scored thanks to a deflection, before Nahuel Bonada eventually gave the home side the lead right before half time.
Ross Archibald tried to get in on the act for South Melbourne in the second half, but his long range strike was saved by Alexander Kondoleon.
Kondoleon couldn't do anything about the corner though, as a cleverly worked short corner routine led to Bonada scoring his second goal of the game.
José Sànz scored in the 86th minute to put Moreland back in the game, and this ended up seeing the away side push forward for the equaliser. While they got close, this ultimately ended up backfiring, as Harry Sawyer scored late on to put the game to bed and South Melbourne won 4-2. Despite not being at their best defensively, the win gave Hellas the three points they needed to go back on top over Avondale, as we reach the pointy end of the season.
South Melbourne play Hume City away from home next week, while Moreland City welcome Port Melbourne to CB Smith Reserve.
