After a week of distraction following turmoil at Oakleigh, Dandenong Thunder needed to get their season back on track with an away win against Dandenong City. And that's exactly what they did.
The game started scrappy, with neither side getting a breakthrough immediately. But a clever half volley from Thunder striker Wade Dekker would give the away side a 1-0 lead. And when Birkan Kirdar doubled the Thunder's lead in the 40th minute, City had seemingly been thunderstruck. Pun intended.
The Thunder didn't let up in the second half, pressing down the City defense and making it hard for the home team to even advance the ball. But slowly, City grew in to the game, and were finally rewarded when Damian Iaconis knocked the ball home from close range in the 81st minute.
City pushed for an equalizer but it never came, and the "travelling" Thunder fans left with a famous 2-1 victory on the enemy's soil.
Speaking after the game, Thunder goalkeeper Pierce Clark credited his teammates resilience for the win, saying "we weren't fluid but we worked hard today".
Dandenong Thunder will take on Green Gully away from home next week, while Dandenong City will also play an away game against Moreland.
